Hey guys! I am back with a Free For All Friday post! Today I am finally going to recap my Dominican Republic trip for you guys!!
So on the first day we traveled to all of the Batey’s that we would be working with for the duration of the trip and then we returned to what I am going to call base camp, but was really the restaurant that fed us for the whole week and was also attached to our soon to be office space. We spent the afternoon at the restaurant playing with a few of the children from the Bateys and working on deconstructing the office space so that we could have the perfect space for BRP. The next three days were full of helping the people of the communities learn new jewelry making skills, photographing the people of the community and the new “Know Me, Love Me” backpack project, entertaining the children of the community, and doing housing evaluations for future trips. Different teams took care of different projects but I was lucky enough to get to participate in all of them randomly throughout the trip so that I would be able to blog about it later! On Thursday, we traveled up an inactive volcano to see where the unique gemstone of the Dominican Republic, Larimar, is mined. Some volunteers traveled down the mine shaft but the rest of us just traveled the horizontal mine shaft and looked down the 150some foot drop that was the vertical shaft. I was perfectly content not going down such a cramped space. It was an eye opening experience, the conditions in which these people worked was awe inspiring. Then we went to the beach! Not just your normal Caribbean beach either, this beach also had a fresh water spring that ran down off the mountain that you could swim in. It was stunning. Then Friday it was back to work with our last day in the Batey’s. Saturday we traveled to the Capital Santo Domingo to be tourists for a few hours and then we all got a little fancy to go out to dinner at the Hard Rock Cafe! I have more detailed posts on the BRP blogs, links are below: Batey Blogging Batey Jewelry Blog
Those have my more detailed day to day blog posts that really talk about what I did and saw each day. I will be posting again with a post entirely dedicated to photos from my trip that I think you will love!
