Dominican Republic Here I Come

June 12, 2015

For those of you who don’t know I have been presented with the amazing opportunity to travel to the Dominican Republic with a great organization, the Batey Rehab Project.  I managed to fundraise $600 for this trip and while most of that money was donated by family all of it meant the world to me. It showed that people were actually interested in what I am going to to do and were willing to help me get there.  I will be helping teach people in Barahona skills that will help provide housing and other necessities for themselves.  Also the group that I am traveling with will be building houses and decorating them during our trip.

Of course I forgot my cute sunhat, and only remembered my slightly dorky sunhat. I also have to wear shorts that go down to my knees, which believe it or not was not something that I had an abundance of in my closet.  I did remember my malaria medication, sunscreen, snacks, and bug spray, so the necessities.  Needless to say my mom is worried about me, sending her first born off to a third world country without her supervision.  It makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside because I know that while she is worried she would never in a million years stop me from doing something that I wanted to do or that she believes would benefit me in the long run. So today she dropped me off at security with a kiss and promises that I call her as often as possible.  The crazy thing is I didn’t cry until I started writing this post! Two weeks at home with my family was not enough, but it seems that no matter how much time I spend at home it isn’t quite enough time!!

But now onto the trip itself so far, I arrived three hours prior to my flight as recommended by the airport and now I am sitting here nursing my 45 minutes of free wifi and wondering what the rush was because I made it through security as fast as I do for domestic flights.  Unfortunately once I reach New York for my 12 hour overnight layover I have to leave the airport, go to baggage claim, get my checked bag, return to security and go through this whole process again.  Kind of makes me want to rip my hair out.  Apparently they cannot store everyone’s bag overnight which makes sense but does not make it any less of a pain in the ass.  But the three hours does give me a chance to write this post for you guys and let you know that if you want to keep up with what we are doing on the trip I will be running the trip’s Batey Blog and the Batey Jewelry blog! I don’t know how frequently I will be posting but it will probably be pretty regularly since I am only there for a little over a week.

Well I am going to spend the rest of my wifi on Netflix and updating my music library! Stay tuned to hear more about my adventures! =]
